11 postmen arrested by CBI
Chennai, Sep 20 (PTI) CBI today arrested 11 postmen from two post offices in the city on charges of collecting bribes from senior citizens, physically handicapped and widows for distributing old age pension.
Based on information that these postmen were collecting Rs 20 to Rs 40 as bribes, CBI conducted surprise checks today at West Mambalam and K K Nagar post offices in the city, a press release from the agency said.
The raids resulted in seizure of Rs 13,945 in unaccounted from the 11 postmen in the two post offices, who were then arrested, it said.
Each pensioner is eligible for Rs 400 as pension per month.
“It is a practice that the Special Tahsildar of each Taluk forwards the consolidated pension amount to the concerned post office by cheque.
