IIT-B Professor faces action over sexual harassment
Mumbai, Feb 1 (PTI) A senior faculty member of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) has been asked to retire compulsorily by its Board of Governors after two students filed complaints alleging their sexual harassment by him.
The Board also passed an order to reduce Professor S K Gupta’s pension and gratuity by a third, IIT spokesperson Jaya Joshi said in a statement here today.
“It was on March 12, 2010, that the Board had passed an order to impose the penalty of compulsory retirement with reduction in pension and gratuity by one-third,” Joshi said.
The Institute received a formal complaint in 2009 about Gupta, who headed the Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering, after the victims had raised the matter with the student counsellor, she said.
After verifying facts, a suspension order was issued against Gupta and an inquiry started in March 2009.
